Lost and Found

The words
and the phosphorescence
they tell me secret things
and so,

I sit night after night
with words for company

engulfing the self

in the power of the truth.

in front
of a screen
blurred with
salty tears

there are moving images
there are ones that are
still.

of beatings and water laced
with chemicals.
gasses that blind
and freedoms that are

lost.

the fan whirs silent,
and the leaves fall
while,
the city burns.
and the lot
are asleep.

my skin prickles and shivers.

but,

not from
the cold
or rain,
or thunder.

these are the days,
of grey,
wayward,
clouds. deviant. and unfaithful.

promiscuous and adulterous.

have you noticed the sun,
the sun, has left?
instead,
a prison of embrace
from a nice man
veiled in hubris and cruelty.

the thirty one,
ten-eleven, the twenty fifth, the ninth
december and november
(these were the darkest months)
numbers, just as much as the
words
they make you
remember remember.

they ignite, they scream
they make up
the blood
on your hands.

chills
down my spine
in this thin cotton shirt.

for these words
in the phosphorescence
have power.
these ideas
of men
of brotherhood
and of unity
are made flesh.

they live
in the darkest of nights
in the streets of concrete and men

and in the heart of
the children of
this soil.

silent dissent
has stopped.

and these chills,
oh these chills,

they have awoken us.

  • I share your sadness. I think it’s going to be a long fight, it would be a kind of fight where it’s hard to see the result, and a journey where every point of it seems that you aren’t getting any nearer to your destination.

Homo humus, Fama fumus, Finis cinis

Take heart, live as you fight.

By the way, I was inspired by your poem to write my latest post “Truth and Freedom of Expression”.

  • I can only say that I am speechless…
    Well done

  • Danyel- Thanks man, I wrote this after days of darkness, hehe, so dramatic. But yes, it’s going to be a long, hard fight, and I don’t think we shall see results in my time, but I will gladly lay down my life for this country and for the future generations to see even one iota of change. That, is how much I want it. I think it’s disgusting, how no one sees how beautiful this place is. Having travelled, not extensively, but too many places, I know Malaysia is worth fighting for. Chin up. And memento mori to you when things get down, Remember that you are mortal, but fight like a God.

    Aslak- Thank you ;)

  • Poignant piece appropriately laced with the correct dose of pugnacity. We’ll stand and fight babe….rabid running dogs or obese pups.

  • I love that photo and have been trying to figure out how you shot it. Put me out of my misery.

  • I liked it, especially the invocation of the numbers we have given the events, the people. I have contributed to this, admittedly. The 31, the Hindraf 5 etc. There’s a poem on my blog called ‘Mother’. The salt of tears appears there too, encrusted, a thin veil of pain.

The frightening thing about all of what’s happening is the views that we would like to think are confined to the despots and their viziers appear to be shared by persons out there, perhaps peering over your shoulder right now. Some of the comments left on Rocky’s post concerning the detention of the Hindraf 5 were vicious.

Keep plugging away. It doesn’t end with me or you. But it has to evolve. And that happens with me and you.

    Imtiaz

  • Imtiaz,

Will look for the poem, and yes you have contributed greatly to these numbers, and I think perhaps, the poetry that keeps getting around in blogs. But that’s okay, won’t hold it against you! :)

Oh don’t I know. Read some of the vitriol so clearly obvious in some of the comments, and it was to be as expected. Some people however, were pissed with him due to him being a racist, not so much because he’s an Indian guy “threatening” Malay rights. Either way, it is my belief that no human being deserves such a lot.

And this is a fight that will never end, after we leave this earth, someone else will take over, because everytime one despot falls, another comes to take his place. So yes, I’m all for evolving. Thanks again Imtiaz!

  • Tom, it was shot with a point and shoot. No flash, and I increased the contrast a little - and tinted it a bit more yellow than it was, that’s it. Nothing else to it. Taken outside Ku De Ta in Bali in May when I was standing on the beach watching the waves, the shadow is of my legs, which looks amazingly long, which was nice! :)

  • Cool…thanks for letting me know. It’s dreamy and surreal. Good work!
