Press freedom in Malaysia hasn’t and isn’t always the best example of freedom of speech. Despite loosening controls, many of us, due to past occurrences, continue to self-censor for fear that we will suffer the wrath of powers-that-be in the name of truth.
So when World Press Freedom day comes along this year, we should laud and give thanks to the people who work tirelessly to expose actions that go against human rights sanctions, who urge administrations to be accountable and to be transparent for the good of their nations, the people who fight to uphold individual liberties in every society and not forgetting the people who are held in brick and mortar prisons and metaphorical prisons for fighting the good fight.
For all these efforts and more, we are thankful. Here’s hoping that good, solid journalism will change the world, and that Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be upheld.
